Bienvenue a Prunedale!

The Apple Crumble is crumbly on the outside, and filled with apples and a sweet, eggy custard on the inside — delicious.

Two brothers from Marseille have purchased one of the local panaderias, and replaced it with “Provence Bakery” (and cafe). Today after gym, instead of getting a tamale or a cup of posole, I had a spinach quiche and a bowl of carrot soup. The blackboard above the counter (now displaying baquettes, croissants, palmiers, and macarons) proclaims: “Bienvenue a Provence!” Croque Monsieur has been added to the breakfast menu, and the coffee is now from Santa Cruz Roasting Co.

The brothers call out orders to each other in French. Are we still in Prunedale, Toto? Some of you know what I mean. Look up Prunedale on one of those “things to do in ____” websites, and you’ll notice that all the things to do are in other towns. That doesn’t mean there isn’t anything to do in Prunedale, of course. There’s, let’s see, chicken-tending, goat-raising, working on cars, walking the dog, and, well, things…
