Good coffee houses are few and far between on the north end of Monterey County, and there are no coffee roasters in this area, period. However, just a few miles south (15 min.) in San Benito county, or to be exact, in San Juan Bautista, there is a fine coffee roasting establishment: Vertigo Coffee. And they have the gear and the coffee blends to prove it. Also, much of their pastry comes from Provence Bakery in Prunedale, which is saying a lot. When I stopped by Vertigo on the first day that Provence delivered their pastry, it was all sold out by 1 p.m. Believe me, there are few real croissants to be had in the Monterey Bay, but Provence Bakery produces the real thing.
Here are some photos that we took:
The all important coffee roaster. This flash gallery shows some steps in the roasting process.
The coffee counter. Stop by sometime and say hi to Dmitri and Kitty. See Vertigo’s youtube tutorial on how to make an espresso rosetta.
