Last Friday, I visited the Watsonville Farmers Market, and at Universal Organics, owned by the Nuñez family. While interviewing Lupe and Jose Arellano (part of the Nuñez family), I learned about papalo. It’s an herb similar to cilantro, but with an earthier scent and flavor. I also learned about yerba santa, a plant with fan-shaped leaves that is an important ingredient in molé and tamales. I was also glad to see purslane there, which my mother used to “pickle” with onions and vinegar for salads. I bought some tomatoes at JGG Farm (owned by the Garcia family), and made a little salad, using some papalo and green onions from Universal Organics. The Cheshire Cat likes it too, obviously.
